When Art Meets the Dining Table – Still Life Food Photography with Oil Painting Style

Equipment Used: Fujifilm GFX 100II + GF110mmF5.6 T/S Macro

I have loved classical paintings since childhood, especially still life oil paintings. Many classical Dutch artists depicted dining tables and everyday scenes with lifelike details and a rich classical artistic atmosphere that has always captivated me.

Since becoming a photographer, I have been trying to pay tribute to classical art through photography. This time, I finally had the opportunity to use the Fujifilm GFX 100II + GF110mmF5.6 T/S Macro for this photoshoot.

Inspired by European classical still life paintings, I drew inspiration from the composition, dark tones, and natural window light effects found in classical artworks for this creative project.

I shot three different scenes using bread, fruits and vegetables, and a daily meal as subjects, presenting them in the style of oil paintings. Through this process, I experienced the exceptional capabilities of the GFX 100II paired with the GF110mmF5.6 T/S Macro in professional food photography.

The wholesome grain aroma of bread brings a sense of natural vitality to the images, with elegant transitions between earthy tones.

When we zoom in on a small section of the image, we can see that the GFX100 II features 102 million effective pixels. Combined with the GF110mmF5.6 T/S Macro lens optimized for food photography, the image quality is incredibly detailed and rich, capturing even the finest flour particles with remarkable clarity.

For this entire photoshoot, I used the GFX 100II’s native ISO80 as the standard sensitivity. This setting provided a wider dynamic range, reduced noise, and exceptionally sharp rendering of food textures and details.

With clear image quality, the textures come to life. The images convey such tactile detail that viewers can almost feel the rough, dry texture of the bread, making the scenes truly lifelike.

Some fruits feature vibrant colors and diverse textures that serve as focal points in the compositions. While we are accustomed to seeing ordinary fruits and vegetables in daily life, changing our perspective and presentation style reveals unexpected beauty in everyday objects.

During this photoshoot, I also utilized the Pixel Shift Multi-Shot function, which achieves 4x resolution and exceptional color reproduction. This feature is particularly valuable for commercial food photography applications.

The GFX100 II medium format sensor paired with the G-mount tilt-shift GF110mmF5.6 T/S Macro lens offers a maximum magnification of 0.5x, making it ideal for macro and still life photography. It perfectly captures the rich details and three-dimensional textures of food subjects.

The GF110mmF5.6 T/S Macro lens provides dual focus control and tilt functionality, allowing precise depth of field management. This enables photographers to keep either the entire scene or a specific section of the subject in sharp focus, significantly improving the success rate of commercial food photography shots.

When photographing textured subjects like bread, I select props with similar textures to enhance the details. Details possess remarkable power, allowing us to see familiar objects from new perspectives. In addition to using the medium telephoto lens, I also employed the MCEX 45G extension tube, which increases the maximum magnification to 1.01x. This setup allowed me to capture the intricate surface textures of the bread in such detail that viewers might not immediately recognize the subject as bread, leaving them amazed by the level of detail.

Compared to previous models, the GFX100 II features doubled signal readout speed, enabling continuous shooting at up to 8.0 frames per second. This capability is perfect for capturing dynamic food scenes like flour being sprinkled over bread, demonstrating the GFX100 II’s ability to maintain exceptional image quality while delivering high-speed performance.

By simulating the style of a European classical oil painting for this dining table scene, the diverse food combinations showcase the GFX 100II’s ability to preserve accurate color details. The precise color reproduction and outstanding detail rendering achieve professional-level results, allowing me to pay artistic tribute to classical oil painters through photography.

The medium telephoto tilt-shift GF110mmF5.6 T/S Macro lens offers advanced control capabilities, whether photographing products, still life subjects, or macro objects. It effectively minimizes distortion and aberrations, making it an excellent choice for commercial food photography applications.

This photoshoot was a truly fulfilling experience. Both the process of creation and the final results filled me with the joy of artistic expression. Using modern technology to pay tribute to classical art is a continuous pursuit for photographers.
